Role & Responsibilities

Communications Operations
  • • Operate and maintain communications systems to support CAF missions
  • • Manage voice and data links, radio systems, and networking equipment
  • • Monitor communication systems to ensure reliable connectivity
  • • Operate systems under mission conditions and pressure
Technical Support & Maintenance
  • • Install, configure, and troubleshoot equipment and cabling
  • • Provide technical support for connectivity problems
  • • Support life-cycle management of communication gear
  • • Act in service desk/help-desk roles when required
Field Operations Support
  • • Deploy and maintain communications in field operations
  • • Repair equipment in tactical environments
  • • Work with mobile systems and temporary installations
  • • Ensure communications remain functional under all conditions
Advisory & Coordination
  • • Advise command on communications capability
  • • Communicate constraints and optimal use of systems
  • • Coordinate with signal technicians and IT specialists
  • • Bridge technical support and mission operations

Work Environment

Deployment & Locations
  • • Split between fixed base facilities and field deployments
  • • Deployable: often travel with units to support operations
  • • Postings across Canada and abroad depending on needs
  • • Work in variable conditions including harsh weather
Working Conditions
  • • Work with mobile systems and austere environments
  • • Some shift-based work for continuous coverage
  • • Must be adaptable and work under pressure
  • • Real-time troubleshooting in challenging conditions

Trade Identity & Culture

Signal Operators are hands-on operator/technician trade, focused on day-to-day operations and maintenance. They must be highly adaptable, capable of operating under pressure, and troubleshooting in real time.

As the bridge between technical support and mission operations, Signal Operators keep communications alive so units can function effectively. This requires strong technical skills combined with operational awareness.

Trade culture emphasizes reliability, adaptability, and teamwork, working closely with signal technicians, IT specialists, and command units.
